I've started the musketeers for this unit but nothing to show yet. As I paint more of these I may do a bit of swopping around to give a better look to the final unit but you get the idea. Some more pikemen will be added and a few figs in more 'military' clothing/ colours.
I have completed the dismounted Royal Dragoons ( 23 figs - all the ones I had.) Next I'll be focusing on completing enough musketeers for a rebel unit and starting on the mounted Royal Dragoons.

No more posts until after the Easter hols!! Happy Easter to you all.

King's/ Royal Artillery

Firstly the artillery. I have done 4 smaller/battalion guns each with 2 crew. These were moved around the battlefield and were manned by a mix of gunners and men drawn from the ranks/ regiments (eg. men from Dumbarton's reg't were used.)

Pics of the smaller guns below. I've purposely not based them yet until I've decided on the basing sizes and if any other figs can be used to give more variation.

There were a number of larger/ emplaced guns at Sedgemoor. These have been represented by 4 bases each containing a gun and 4 crew. The fourth base is not yet quite complete as I want to add some unarmoured pikemen holding various equipment (rammer, sponge ..) I need to find them !!

Basing again not complete due to working out base size and also because I need to paint some 'bits' to add in such as buckets, piles of canon balls and the usual paraphernalia!

Guns are described as being of 'red ledde' with a dark crimson appearance so have tried to achieve that effect (my interpretation) on most of the guns.

Dismounted Royal Dragoons

Pics of dragoons so far (another 4 just finished but not photoed yet!) My impression is they fought (mainly) dismounted at Sedgemoor but not as 'skirmishers' as we usually think of them. More of as a unit (but looser order) protecting the flanks of the Royal Regiments. Not sure how to base them - either individually or on bases, of say 3 or 4, but spread out a bit!!

Anyway, I can sort that out later let's just get the rascals painted first!
Not sure just yet which regiment this will be - I need to find my GMB Flags and choose a suitable one.

Tried to give a flavour of pistols and swords on this attacking/charging unit.
Some pics of the regiment. Once flag attached they are good to go!
The figures are all Front Rank Miniatures.

I've been trying to get the correct 'look' of the figures, that I'm happy with, for the late 17th century. This, obviously, is just my interpretation but it had to be right for me. Once I'm happy with the look of the finished samples I can begin painting units. (I did this with the Otterburn figs previously posted but fortunately I had Dave Imrie's figs to go on and the look he achieved for his figs was the one I also wanted.)

The 'look' I wanted here was a slightly 'scruffy', earthy look to the figs. I wanted to paint them neatly but also have the feel of the period. Colours, for the most part, not too bright for this mainly civilian army. I think this is where the brown undercoat paid off (like with my ECW stuff.) It gives a less pristine finish and personally I think it works here but each to their own.

The figs on a sample base. Still haven't decided on whether to do 6 figs per base (eg. for 'Lily Banners' rules) or 4 per base.
I'm currently working on completing all the artillery figs/guns I need for the King''s Army at Sedgemoor.
And completing some Royalist ECW cavalry.

More of that next time.olddorghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10734059095975707810noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2477092023370661460.post-73979730574945554652013-02-28T08:00:00.001-08:002013-02-28T08:38:05.030-08:00Front Rank - Sedgemoor FigsSome time ago, when Front Rank brought out their new late 17th Century range, I bought quite alot of their stuff with a view to doing the Sedgemoor campaign again!! I thought I'd demo a few to see how I planned to paint them.

I, once again, decided to use the 'brown undercoat/oil wash' method I've used on all my ECW stuff.

Below are some examples of the artillery figures done up as the King's artillery train with helping hands from Dumbarton's regiment and recruited civilians/matrosses to do the carrying, lifting and pulling!!

Early days to be thinking about basing etc. Just thought I'd try a few to get in the swing. Unfortunately I keep getting that 'Otterburn' twinge and feel it won't be long before I drift that way again. Who knows!!?

Dunbarton's helpers with the white cuffs!

Not much to say about this other than I was using (mainly) one of many Renegade Miniatures regiments I had bought quite a while ago when the figures worked out at about 49p each. The Officer pointing, drummer and odd other figure are from the Bicorne range.

The green coat is a Miniature Paints Dark Green and/or Vallejo Flat Green highlighted with Vallejo Olive Green.
Could be any yellow coat regiment but I've done this one as Sir Andrew Potley's as at the battle of Cropredy Bridge 1644.

Figs by Renegade and Bicorne. Flag hand painted.

I was beginning to be owerwhelmed by the choices of what to paint due to the vast array of castings I have and the interest in the various periods which was exciting me (Sedgemoor, ECW, Dark Ages, and more recently the Otterburn campaign 1388.) I decided to just choose the figs, paint them (and enjoy painting them) and not stick to any rigid plans. That was my plan last year and it seemed to work - so I'm going to repeat that this year.

All being well I should have a good mix of periods to post during the year and some more tutorials on how I do the painting - though I feel I've oulined the main principles of my methods and the rest is just a case of sitting down and doing it.
This collection is growing and is steadily using up some of my unpainted castings.

The following regiments have allowed me to continue using my 'Oil Rub' undercoat method as all the Otterburn figs were done using the 'black' undercoat method. Switching between the 2 methods gives variety and prevents me from losing touch with either.
Sorry it's a bit late but I've been very busy sorting stuff out at home.

Last Year
When I started this blog last January it was my intention to run it for 1 year to see how it went and to give a focus to my attempt at reducing the 'Metal Mountain.' I wasn't sure whether to continue this year as it may well have become 'more of the same' and not very inspiring. I'd covered most of my personal painting tips and others are already very available via the net or books/mags...

In summary the blog achieved it's aim - I methodically painted lots of figs (more than I posted.) A surprising side effect was the interest in the blog, the followers and the motivation I got from the many positive comments and interest in how I did things. I really appreciated people visiting and commenting on the postings.

This Year
Last year it was sorting out the 'Metal Mountain' of unpainted castings. This year I've been sorting out all the painted figs I've got (both painted by me and those I've bought from other painters/ collectors.) I've boxed them up as collections (large and small) and produced lists for potential buyers.

Over the couse of 2012 I painted quite alot of figs and didn't really focus on the selling of them. Quite a few pieces went but largely through word of mouth and to people I know in the hobby. So that I can clear the decks of painted figs (remember I'm a painter NOT a collector) I intend to focus a little more on selling this year.

I prefer to sell to peole in the UK and to those I can meet (deliver the figs to) at shows because I don't want the figures to be damaged in the post. Most of the figs I've painted have spears/ pikes/ bills etc which are far too difficult to parcel up securely and the chances of them being damaged is quite high. I know some professional painters have to do this all the time but to be perfectly honest I can't face doing this!! I know this reduces considerably the market for buyers but we'll see how it goes.

My plan is to continue painting to complete units/ create new ones and then post picks as usual but advertise them as 'For Sale.' I'll also post again some pics of units I've already done (and posted previously) with details of the price etc
.
I charge around £10-12.50 per foot fig and all those figs from the blog postings (unless already sold) are available to buy. (These are prices for my painting and all figs on the blog were painted by me - I'll make it clear if I sell figs painted by other painters.)

So, let's start this year in similar fashion to last year with a Sedgemoor 1685/ Late 17th century unit.

1st Foot Guards FOR SALE SOLD -thanks for all your interest.
Nothing much to post in the way of recently painted figs so will wait until the New Year for more pics and posts. I'll probably not paint much up until the end of all the festivities.

So, a big thank you to all the followers, contributors and visitors to this site.

Till the next post: I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous (here's hoping) New Year. May all your wishes be miniatures!!

That completes the main units I was hoping to do before Christmas.

I'm currently working on some figs to comprise the Douglas stand/ unit but I'm in no hurry to complete that - it will be done at an 'as and when' pace as I intend to enjoy the Christmas festivities to the full!!

Here's a few I've done already. These will 'bulk out' the Douglas and Douglas Standard Bearer figures who will be centre stage.

The Knight (second left) is Sir John Lindsey of Dunford who played an important role around the Douglas command so he will be included here - more details on this later (when I get my facts correct.)

All figs are from Claymore Castings.
Fantastic flags from Flags of War.

Thanks for all your previous comments on my work - they are warmly recieved and much appreciated.

I've been painting quite prolifically this week with a view to getting to a certain point with this collection before taking it easy over Christmas and getting the Christmas preparations underway.

I managed to paint all the figs for the Earls of March and Moray (Scots) but ran out of suitably sized bases.

I've also done enough figs (I think) for a small unit for Sir Thomas Erskine (Scots.)

I hope to buy some basing material whilst Christmas shopping tomorrow or at RECON (the Pudsey Wargames Show) tomorrow morning. I can then get them based and finished before Christmas - here's hoping!! I like to run a tight schedule but will really enjoy the festive period, mainly free from figure painting .

I did, however, also manage to paint a unit of archers and had enough bases to finish them off.

Here is a unit of Scots Archers made up from various retinues. They are under the Douglas banner and safely behind stakes as they will be protecting the baggage camp from those English rascals!

Again, I can add to this unit to make it more dramatic as and when. My first objective is to get the main units completed first!
Here is the Percy Battle for the Otterburn Project I'm working on. I must say these figures are exquisite and I'm on the verge of painting nothing else (much) in the near future apart from these - we'll see how it goes.

There are 6 bases in this battle. The front line contains the personalities. I can add (and intend to) more stands as and when I complete them to make this a large battle and it should look impressive.

I've based this extensively on the Percy battle produced by Dave Imrie (Saxon Dog blog) so I must thank him for the inspiration, colour schemes and distribution of figures on the bases. In time I'll start thinking for myself but it speeds things up when starting a new project if you can be guided by experts in the field!

Flags are by Flags of War - they look great!! I keep meaning to thank Darrell Hindley for his tutorial on the Saxon Dog site. He clearly describes his method of making the L - shaped banner. I've used his method for every banner and it works perfectly every time - just follow every step he outlines and the results are fantastic. So thanks for that Darrell!

The bases are not complete but wanted to post this week. Will show finished items next time.
(As the light was fading a few pics seem a little blurred but you get the idea.)
Horses were painted using the oil wash method described elsewhere on this blog. Riders painted seperately - undercoated black, metal work given a light dry brush of Vallejo Oily Steel and painted up from there.

On future batches I will use very different shield colours and designs so that when based there will be much greater differentiation between shields. It makes it easier/ quicker to use similar colour schemes when doing batches.
As I intend to sell these not sure about whether to base individually, say for Saga, or in pairs for larger games where moving pieces is easier with fewer bases!!
Figures are all done so now await my next order from Claymore which is underway as we speak.

I seem to have, for the most part, become solely involved in the Otterburn campaign and am becoming increasingly keen to build up a suitable 'army sized' collection.

I have, alongside this 'Otterburn' work, managed to complete some Sedgemoor, ECW, Norman units which I intend to post but my pre-occupation with Otterburn has meant posting will have to wait till a little later. While I am preparing the figs from my latest order I will probably be able to post them as I will have little else on the Otterburn front to show!

Below is a compilation of the bits I've been doing for Otterburn.

Scots Pike:

I'm going to do 2 bases (one command, one men-at-arms) for all the units involved and then build them up to larger units. This will give me a good spread of the combatants and means I can use all the lovely flags I have from Flags of War! The only exeption will be the Percy Battle which I will do in one go as 6 bases as I have done a few figs already for this main unit.

Sir William Hilton - command base

The 'Percy Boys' - Sir Henry 'Hotspur' right and Sir Ralph on the left.

A very 'rough' mock up of my first 3 bases for the Percy battle. These are the command bases. Flags etc. all need completing and some figs re-arranging but you get the idea.

That's all the Otterburn figs painted so until the next lot arrive and are prepared for painting I'll get some other bits done and posted.

All figs are Claymore Castings and flags and shield transfers are from Flags of War.

First up is Sir Mathew Redman's contingent followed by 2 units of English archers.

All flags and shield transfers are by Flags of War. All figures are Claymore Castings.

I'm using the archer unit below as part of the Percy's retinue. I have nearly used up all the castings I purchased from Claymore Castings so the Percy Battle itself will have to wait until I get some more. Good news is I'm close to having painted all I bought so that fits in nicely with the 'reducing the metal mountain' plan I had back in January!!
NOTE
I've been having problems loading pics into my blog hence the lack of recent posts. I think I may have been 'over heavy' on the pics on this blog as I get the impression things are starting to slow down and 'fill up' if that makes sense.

I posted some other pics of the Otterburn figs on the Steve Dean Forum last Friday under the title 'Otterburn 1388' figs but was unable to get them uploaded to this blog. I kept getting the message 'server returned invalid response' so I am none the wiser. Anyway with a bit of playing around with Picassa I've managed to get the above pics uploaded.
The figures are delightful and a pleasure to paint. My WIP on these figs is shown below.

I have painted all of these from a black undercoat and am experimenting with various colours/ colour schemes until I decide how I want the units to look. I have used Dave Imrie and Andrew Taylor's colour schemes as my starting point as they look perfect for the period (and who could doubt their choices when it comes to beautifully painted figs!!)
I've used all the dragoon castings I could find - when/if I find some more I'll do another 6 in blue coats giving 3 regiments of 9 men each. Command figs will be done at a later stage.
Next up some pics of my first real attemp at a unit of Claymore Castings 'Otterburn' figures - a unit of Scots. Despite my efforts not to spend this year and focus on the existing 'Metal Mountain' I have been swept away by this range and have started a small collection based largely on the collection of Dave Imrie (Saxon Dog.) which he and Andrew Taylor displayed at the Claymore Show this year.

Here are some ECW dragoons I've been doing - just completed the last few although some were done a while ago.
First batch are red coats - these will serve as Okey's Dragoons of the New Model Army.

Castings are from Renegade - these particular castings, if I'm honest, are not my favourites from Renegade but do look ok when painted and based.

These are based for 'Victory Without Quarter' rules by Quindia Studios.
I had some banners which I'd bought a few years ago so it's nice to be able to use them at last.

The banners used are from LBM Studios and are very good. Possibly another coat of Matt varnish is required on the banners themselves as there seems to be a slight sheen!
