Scots Archers 1388

I've been painting quite prolifically this week with a view to getting to a certain point with this collection before taking it easy over Christmas and getting the Christmas preparations underway.

I managed to paint all the figs for the Earls of March and Moray (Scots) but ran out of suitably sized bases.

I've also done enough figs (I think) for a small unit for Sir Thomas Erskine (Scots.)

I hope to buy some basing material whilst Christmas shopping tomorrow or at RECON (the Pudsey Wargames Show) tomorrow morning. I can then get them based and finished before Christmas - here's hoping!! I like to run a tight schedule but will really enjoy the festive period, mainly free from figure painting .

I did, however, also manage to paint a unit of archers and had enough bases to finish them off.

Here is a unit of Scots Archers made up from various retinues. They are under the Douglas banner and safely behind stakes as they will be protecting the baggage camp from those English rascals!

Here a few WIP pics of the other figs I've done ready to be based ASAP.

Sir Thomas Erskine and friends:

Earls March and Moray and retainers:

A couple of casualties I tucked in to the painting schedule. Douglas on the left and an English knight.

Next up - Above units based and complete.

Scots 'Schiltron' at Otterburn

Here is the completed unit of Scots. This unit represents Drummond and Montgomery at Otterburn 1388.

Again, I can add to this unit to make it more dramatic as and when. My first objective is to get the main units completed first!

A few close-ups of the individual stands:

Figures from 'Claymore Castings.' Great flags from 'Flags of War.'

Next up (hopefully) is the schiltron for the Earl of March and Earl of Moray.

Percy Battle Complete

A few pics of the Percy Battle based and ready for action. There are some shots of the individual stands to show the quality of the castings.

Sir Henry 'Hotspur' Percy:

Sir Ralph Percy:

Sir Ralph's Banner:

Well underway are the next batch of Scots - I've completed the back row of the Drummond and Montgomery unit and will post the completed unit soon. This will be a 6 base unit. Flags and personalities in the front row!

The Percy 'Battle' 1388

Here is the Percy Battle for the Otterburn Project I'm working on. I must say these figures are exquisite and I'm on the verge of painting nothing else (much) in the near future apart from these - we'll see how it goes.

There are 6 bases in this battle. The front line contains the personalities. I can add (and intend to) more stands as and when I complete them to make this a large battle and it should look impressive.

I've based this extensively on the Percy battle produced by Dave Imrie (Saxon Dog blog) so I must thank him for the inspiration, colour schemes and distribution of figures on the bases. In time I'll start thinking for myself but it speeds things up when starting a new project if you can be guided by experts in the field!

Flags are by Flags of War - they look great!! I keep meaning to thank Darrell Hindley for his tutorial on the Saxon Dog site. He clearly describes his method of making the L - shaped banner. I've used his method for every banner and it works perfectly every time - just follow every step he outlines and the results are fantastic. So thanks for that Darrell!

The bases are not complete but wanted to post this week. Will show finished items next time.
(As the light was fading a few pics seem a little blurred but you get the idea.)

Fist up the Front row
Henry Percy (Hotspur) is on the right and his brother Ralph is on the centre base.

Next the rear row

The full Battle

Just the basing to complete then its onto another Scots unit - Drummond and Montgomery.
