Norman Spearmen

The first batch of painted Norman spearmen. The repetative use of some colours here is intentional - it makes painting the figures easier/ a little quicker. When the figs are distributed amongst the different units they should look more random!

Saxon Fyrd

A unit of fyrd from my 1066 Saxon army. Crusader Miniatures painted from a black undercoat.

The matt black undercoat is Revel no 6. This was recommended to me, some years ago, by the very talented painter Andrew Taylor (Scotland.) It dries incredibly flat and very quickly. What I do is thin it quite heavily with Humbrol thinners and give the figures a heavy wash - this dries very matt and allows all the detail to stand out and, as with my brown undercoat method, makes all the detail easy to see and paint. I'll post a short step through and pics when I revisit the Saxons and Normans later this year as I have a large Norman army to paint!!

Some LBM shield transfers used here and there.

Harold and his Huscarls

A slight deviation from the Sedgemoor stuff while I get the next unit ready!
Crusader Miniatures Saxons. Part of a Saxon Army (1066) I have been working on. In my 'metal mountain' I have loads of Normans and I will be doing a Norman Army to match these using Crusader Miniatures and Gripping Beast Normans.

These were painted using a black undercoat – more of that later – this is just a ‘taster’ for now. Shields painted by hand with occasional LBM transfer (which I highly recommend!)
Crusader Miniatures are a pleasure to paint and much of the inspiration for painting these came from Tom Weiss – a truely remarkable painter!
